Tell Me What Really Happened Book Review

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC copy of Tell Me What Really Happened by Chelsea Sedoti. Tell Me What Really Happened centers around five teenagers who go for a weekend camping trip out in the woods. But when one of them goes missing, each of the remaining four friends has a different piece of the puzzle.

This book is truly unique, as the entire story is told at the police station through the witness statements of the four friends. And since their testimonies happen after the events have transpired, little tid bits and tangents serve as foreshadows to drive the plot forward. And it’s especially interesting when the four testimonies don’t line up! It’s such a creative way to tell the story, and it left me wondering “what really happened?” up until the end!

Such A Quiet Place Book Review

I have been a big fan of Megan Miranda’s work for quite a while, and I was extremely excited to be able to read and review an advanced copy of her newest book, Such A Quiet Place, coming this July.

Such A Quiet Place is about a small and safe community where everyone knows everyone and they all look out for each other… or so it would seem. Until the mysterious murder of two of the residents unhinges their sense of security and what they thought they knew about each other.

Megan Miranda is a master of suspense and probably the best at writing flashbacks. She effortlessly sweeps you away into the life and past of her characters and reveals little by little the answers to the mystery; answers that lie in their memories. Just like all her books, Such A Quiet Place does not disappoint.

This book reveals the characters’ flashbacks in a slightly different way than her previous books. The flashbacks in this story are only revealed through the characters reminiscing, and not through real-time scenes of past events, like she has done before. However, this new approach offers a fresh take to something she does so well.

The characters in Such A Quiet Place were well written and full of layers, pulling you deeper and deeper into their lives. And the murder mystery kept building throughout the narrative, letting you believe you knew what was going on, until she flips it on you with shocking twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat, turning page after page.

Another home run for Megan Miranda. A joy to read, and I can’t wait for what she brings us next!

Enchanter (Flawed #4) Book Review

enchanter_cvr_med-683x1024I wanted to take a moment to post my official review of Enchanter, the latest release in the Flawed series by Becca J. Campbell. If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s set in a world where some people develop supernatural abilities, sometimes referred to as “flaws” by those who feel their abilities are more of a curse than a blessing.  I’m a huge fan of Becca J. Campbell and the whole Flawed series, so if you haven’t read them yet, be sure to pick them up! The series consists of four full-length novels: Empath, OutsiderProtector, Enchanter. There are also a few short stories in the series: Pulled, Constricted, and The Father Hunt.

Here is the official synopsis of Enchanter:

Violet can make anyone obey her. And she wants revenge.

After a series of abductions, Jade just wants to enjoy life with her boyfriend, Logan. But her empathic flaw has morphed into something even worse. Now her emotions are affecting everyone nearby, making her a dangerous force. Jade’s volatile emotions and Logan’s super-strength make a deadly mix.

Meanwhile, Violet, a woman from Logan’s past, has turned from infatuated colleague to jealous stalker. After recovering from an injury, she develops the power to control minds. Now Violet is finally able to get anything—and anyone—she wants.

And Violet wants Logan.

While Jade is dealing with her escaping emotions, she meets fellow English major Graham. He is the only one who knows what Violet is truly capable of. Jade enlists his help to in trying to save Logan from Violet’s clutches. But can they stop Violet before she puts them under her spell?

This fourth and final installment in the Flawed series once again pulls together a crew of friends with unique abilities. This time they must face the fury of a vengeful enchantress.

Now that you know a little about the story, here’s my review:

Wow, what a great read! Enchanter by Becca J Campbell is the fourth and final book in the Flawed series. And I must say, she ended this amazing journey in a spectacular way.

In case you haven’t read all of the books (something that should be remedied immediately) The Flawed series centers around a group of individuals who have developed supernatural abilities ranging from ultra strength, to not feeling pain, to absorbing the pain and ailments of others. Enchanter again follows the story of Jade, an empath who is learning to control her evolving powers. She is confronted by some very tough decisions, challenging her values and her control. These challenges cause her to cross paths with a couple of familiar characters: the ever-loveable Graham from The Father Hunt, and Violet, this installment’s love-to-hate villain. Violet has developed some abilities of her own, and she is out for revenge.

Becca has taken us through an exciting ride with this series, and Enchanter is the perfect cherry on top. The characters are loveable and well written, and the story was gripping and fast-paced, not letting you put it down until the end. It was a great addition and a satisfying ending to the series. When I first heard this would be the last book, naturally I was sad to see it go. But after reading how this one ended, I feel it was a good place to stop. The series started with the characters feeling as though their powers were a flaw, something to despise and fear. But at the conclusion, they are viewed as something that can be used to help others, not to fear, but to embrace. It was a good message and a fitting conclusion. But not to worry… I hear a spin off series is coming out next, so while this series may be closed, there is more to come from the world of “glitches.”
So until next time…

P.S. I would like to thank Becca J Campbell for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I hope you enjoyed reading the review. Look for Becca’s books on Amazon. And check out her website: BeccaJCampbell.com to stay up-to-date on her upcoming books, news, giveaways, and more!

Grounded Book Review

I realized it’s been a while since I’ve posted a book review, and I’ve been reading and listening to audio books like a mad lady. So here is my review of one of my most recent favorites, The Grounded Trilogy by G.P. Ching, which consists of Grounded, Charged and Wired.

Here is the official synopsis of the first book:

In Hemlock Hollow, life isn’t easy, but it is simple. Things in my community haven’t changed much in over three hundred years, since the time my Amish ancestors came to what is now the Green Republic. I milk my cow by hand, make fresh bread every morning, and hope to be courted by Jeremiah, a boy I’ve known since childhood.

When my father falls ill, the English doctor says a hospital outside the wall can heal him. Jeremiah convinces me to go on rumspringa, to experience the outside world as an Englisher in order to be closer to my father during his recovery. Others have gone before me. They claim it’s an adventure. But adventure turns to horror as an ordinary light switch thrusts me into a new world, and revelations about my personal history make me question everything I believe.

All my life I’ve worked to be simple. I can’t pretend anymore. Nothing about me is simple.

Gateway to Reality Scavenger Hunt Blog Tour

Hello all!

Last week I helped announce the release of Becca J Campbell’s newest novel, Gateway to Reality. If you missed her guest post, check it out here.

In that post, I promised you all my official review as well as information on how to get more entries into Becca’s fabulous giveaway. So here it is…

Gateway to Reality by Becca J Campbell is a science fiction novel that turns our perception of what is real and what is fantasy on its head. In the book, Wes discovers that our world is not real. In fact, it is a creation of our minds as an escape from the real Existence, where nothing makes sense and logic doesn’t exist. But the worlds are more connected than we think…

I loved Gateway to Reality. If you’ve read the Circle books by Ted Dekker, they are similar in that when a character is asleep in our world, he awakes in the other. But beyond that, this is a new and original story that will take you to another world, root you there with lovable characters, and drive you forward with an intriguing and mysterious storyline. Fans of Becca J Campbell’s other works such as Foreign Identity and the Sub-Normal Series will love her latest. Not only does she demonstrate once again that she is a master of science fiction, but she eloquently weaves a love story into the mix and wraps it together with a message of staying true to what is real and not being bound to a fantasy.

I would definitely recommend Gateway to Reality and I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Gateway To Reality Release Blitz

Gateway to Reality: A Mind-Bending Urban Fantasy Tale by Becca J. Campbell

I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my second novel, Gateway to Reality, now available at Amazon US and Amazon UK. Keep reading for a chance to win one of three prize packs!

Gateway to Reality

Here’s a little more about the story:

Talented artists shouldn’t be waiting tables, scraping by, and living mediocre lives. But that’s exactly what art school graduate Wes Teague is doing.

Then he wakes from a bizarre dream, haunted by the sense that his life isn’t real. A harrowing truth presents itself—the real world lies in his dreams, not when he’s wide awake.

The dream world he enters each night is rich and vibrant. Chicago appears the same on the surface, but chaos runs rampant as gravity, physics, and other laws of nature become fluid, changing unexpectedly. There, Wes’s parents, brother, and sister are strangers. His girlfriend Emily doesn’t recognize him. Wes longs to return, to unlearn the truth about his dual reality.

Wes would sacrifice almost anything to get back to blissful ignorance in a false world.

But now he has feelings for the real Emily.

The Matrix Meets Inception

This book explores ideas similar to two of my favorite movies, though it wasn’t directly inspired by either. Dreams are key in the story, as is the idea of two worlds—one that’s real and one that isn’t. Gateway to Reality merges the two concepts and fuses them together with good dose of romance in a way that is fresh and vibrant.

Genre-wise, Gateway to Reality is a New Adult novel that walks the line between Urban Fantasy and Science Fiction. It is a topsy-turvy, reality-bending, relationship-driven tale that explores the relationship between truth and fantasy.

Mortal Book Review

~

Mortal, by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee, is the second in a trilogy called The Books of Mortals. This series is set well into humanity’s future, where, due to a manufactured virus called Legion, every human is stripped of all emotion, save for fear. Fear keeps everyone obedient, while lack of love or hatred eliminates war and violence. What no one knows is, every human being on the planet is actually dead, even though they are walking and breathing. However, a vial of ancient blood, kept safe by a group called The Keepers, allows five people who drink it to have all their emotions restored, and to fully come alive. This life, and also the title of the first book, is Forbidden.

In this second installment, a young man named Jonathan, was prophesied to come to power and bring life to all. His blood can bring that true life to those who are “dead.” His group of followers refer to themselves as Mortals.

In similar fashion as the first book, Mortal takes the reader on a fantastic journey with action, suspense, love, betrayal… and asks the question, “What does it mean to be alive?” Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee brilliantly incorporate their faith in God into these books through an epic display of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for us to truly live.

I had the privilege of meeting the authors during their Mortal book tour. And let me tell you, they are genuine, pouring their hearts and lives into these books. Something they always say is that writers bleed on the page. And it shows through their writing that they’ve invested everything to bring us this awesome story of salvation.

I loved this book and, out of 5 stars, I would give it 10 if I could. I’m anxiously awaiting the third and final installment to be released in 2013. There is also a short story prequel to the series called The Keeper. It’s not a required read to understand the trilogy, but it does give you a little more insight into the story. Also, if you’ve read The Circle Series by Ted Dekker, there’s a little tidbit in there that will tie it all together and put a smile on your face. 🙂

To all you Circle members out there,

Dive Deep
